EXERCISE MOTIVATORS
Culture can be supportive of physical activity…or not. Researchers studied various motivators for physical activity and exercise. Since being physically active is a result of self-determination, they described the mix of autonomy, competence, ego, task, and relatedness of these in the motivation to exercise. American subjects were more autonomous, task oriented, and physically active than Turkish subjects reminding researchers and ultimately us clinicians to adapt exercise to the patient and his/her interests. (1) Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. has to find out what motivates you! Simple? Fast? At-home? Out of the house? Maybe some mindfulness? To boost the exercise effort, adding mindfulness appears hopeful. Researchers found though that people have misconceptions or no concept of what mindfulness is or how it is beneficial to mental and overall health. One study looked at the effectiveness of physical activity and mindfulness activities in preventing mental health issues and concluded that it was promising. (2) Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. appreciates those types of benefits!
BENEFITS FOR COGNITION, PAIN RELIEF WITH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
A pill maybe?! None of us would confess to wanting a pill to be physically fit…or would we? Of course not! As the pharmacological world looks for drugs to improve cognitive function in the aging folks, researchers have also listed nutrition, diet, probiotics, cognitive training, and physical activity, exercise, even dancing – ballroom, aerobic and Latin - as being valuable. (3) Major motivators can be healthy lifestyle behaviors mixed with chiropractic care. Treating and relieving chronic pain – related to reduced brain gray matter and impaired cognitive function - was found to restore normal brain function. (4) That’s what Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. does: treat chronic pain with chiropractic care incorporating spinal manipulation.
OLDER FOLKS AND YOUNG KIDS
Curious researchers tackled the question of older adults’ goals, motivations, and self-determination motivators to follow a healthy lifestyle and participate in activities to support that lifestyle like exercising and eating well. Factors like personality and goal-setting habits were proposed as influencers. (5) Even in kids, researchers saw that behaviors like breakfast eating, exercise, and sleep patterns affected their healthy lifestyle. Skipping breakfast in the morning – 11% of kids in one study did this – was linked to sleep duration, bedtime, and physical activity. 9.5% of kids said they experienced poor sleep. 24.9% did not sleep more than the suggested 9 hours. Girls were not as physically active. Sad news: Such less-than-healthy habits lessened children’s hand-eye coordination and attention. Positive] news: Better sleep quality enhanced reaction time in a visual attention exam.
