BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the growing recognition that diet plays a valuable role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to maintain normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another recent paper explains that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk as well as risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this past month showed that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet closely had lower odds of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, decreased risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our Auburn chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
