Auburn Chiropractic Nutrition: Gut, Bone, Chondroitin Sulfate

July 07, 2021

The gut and osteoporosis. They may not seem be connected conditions beyond the fact that they both take place in the body. Osteoporosis’ effect is often seen in deteriorated bone. Gut issues’ effect is often seen in digestion problems. Researchers now are finding links between gut health and osteoporosis’ effect on bone health. Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. helps Auburn chiropractic patients experiencing both issues!

OSTEOPOROSIS AND THE GUT HEALTH CONNECTION

Auburn osteoporosis is quite prevalent. So are gut issues. Gut health change with probiotic use has grown to be more commonplace in recent years to address chronic diseases like autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases as well as diabetes and cancer. Today, researchers are looking at the health of the gut microbiome to deal with bone mass regulation which affects osteoporosis and osteopenia. (1) Senile osteoporosis is linked to a decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and altered microbiota. How these are associated in postmenopausal osteoporosis is not yet known. A study that tried to sort this out did find that there was reduced bacterial richness and diversity in postmenopausal osteoporosis with significant contrast in levels of phyla and genera in gut microbiota. (2) Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. sees these new discoveries linking gut health and osteoporosis as being useful in guiding Auburn osteoporosis treatment planning.

DIETARY HELP FOR OSTEOPOROSIS

Auburn chiropractic care of osteoporosis is complex incorporating spinal manipulation by way of the gentle Cox® Technic protocols, exercise, and nutrition. Framing osteoporosis as a condition likely encompassing the microbiota of the gut, researchers are now trying dietary approaches to address osteoporosis. Nutritionally, a chondroitin sulfate/calcium complex improved the BMD and microstructure of the osteoporotic femur bone in a rat study. It also changed levels of the serum bone markers. This dietary intervention of chondroitin and calcium has the potential to ease osteoporosis and its symptomatology. (3) Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. is very familiar with the effects of chondroitin sulfate for disc health and is excited that it may also benefit osteoporosis.
