Could a Plant Compound Help Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?
If you've ever dealt with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs count to your daily well-being and mobility. Now, promising new research is looking at a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, but two studies published in 2026 dug deeper into how it may specifically support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin safeguards nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural cushions. (1) Researchers determined that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In everyday terms, this helps disc cells remove damaged parts and function better, which may help slow the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a key role in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin shows promise as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS
While additional research is required before quercetin becomes a regular part of disc care, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a helpful role alongside conservative, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C., we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's natural healing.
